Quickies: SOR Remake Pulled by Sega
Source(s): Kotaku

In a not so surprising turn of events, Sega has pulled a cease and desist order on Bomberlink's eight year old fan tribute to Streets of Rage. Kotaku has more on the story.

' "SEGA have contacted regarding the download hosted on this site," writes a Bombergames forum moderator. "While this issue is being resolved, please do not upload the game for others to download. Any links posted on this site will be removed. Thank you."
Forum moderators have since locked a thread discussing the availability of Streets of Rage Remake.
The Streets of Rage Remake web site says its creators had informed Sega of the project during development via "a formal letter," but recent press of the 16-bit beat 'em up may have gotten Bombergames noticed.
Sega is still in the business of selling versions of Streets of Rage games through various means, including Steam, Wii Virtual Console and disc-based compilations for consoles.
Kotaku contacted Sega for details on its request to Bombergames, but the company has not yet officially responded. '
It's very sad to see this project (which was a really good game from what I have played of it) being shut down. However, it's to be expected. Though this does make me wonder if Sega is actually working on making an SOR game or are they just coasting on the success of VC and iOS versions of the series.

Seeing that Remake was the only new Streets of Rage game to have come out in almost two decades, one would think that there is enough interest in SOR to make a new one. Personally I feel that if there's interest there that means that there is a void that seriously needs to be filled. However, I also feel that Sega hasn't been the company it was in the 90's for a very long time, so I'm not quite sure if they can successfully pull off such a feat without other developers stepping in and sullying the license with some strange current generation mentality. Remember Golden Axe: Beast Rider?

Hopefully, Sega may be finding interest in Bomberlink's venture to possibly distribute the game and add in some additional bells and whistles like official art, some sprite adjustments ect for distribution through them. This would be a smart idea considering SOR Remake is a very content heavy game, and is well worth the playthrough. Maybe we'll see Remake on the VC, PSN and XBLA stores? So far, distribution of the game has been put on lockdown so I would hope that maybe we'll see something good come of this.

Then again only time will tell.
