Speculating about New Super Mario Bros. 3DS

From Nintendolife

Nintendo is working on 2D and 3D Mario games, and we've already seen Paper Mario, but there's another 2D Mario adventure in the works, as revealed by this Iwata Asks.
Reuniting the four men behind Super Mario Bros., the interview finishes with a look to the future for Nintendo's mascot, with Shigeru Miyamoto stating:
So, in the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system. I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new Super Mario Bros. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS.

Although "as soon as possible" could be any time after tomorrow, really, it seems likely Nintendo will unveil what's sure to be a flagship 3DS title at this year's E3 in June. Nintendo Life's Corbie Dillard will be at E3 to bring you all the news and hands-on straight from Los Angeles, so you'll hear about whatever surprises Miyamoto has up his sleeves right here.
While people are surprised about these recent developments, and I don't blame them considering the fact that classic Mario is pretty awesome, I have to wonder what things are they going to do in this game in order to really bring Mario into the third dimension.Oh we know that the effect will bring various elements of the game out and provide more depth of field to bring us into the mushroom kingdom, so that's a given, but I know that Nintendo, or Miyamoto isn't just going to settle for just a "by the numbers" Mario game in three dimensions.

Of course the author brings up Paper Mario which had the 2D/3D switching effect, and this would be actually interesting to see in acutal 3D (and not in a horrible shade of eye exploding crimson), but my mind is automatically going in a completely different direction than this. To be honest the first thing I thought of was another Mario game that was featured as a demo for the Virtual boy.

Of course that eventually became WarioLand

So naturally I'm thinking I would love to see something that's a hybrid of New Super Mario Bros. Wii in terms of multiplayer mixed with Wario Land's depth switching format. Having a Mario game where you can have things going on in both foreground and background with some classic platforming and some new (possibly more useful ) powerups than the previous game would be both hectic and awesome. Naturally, with it being a handheld they would definitely have to incorporate online multiplayer so those who were irritated about Mario 5 not having it will be finally happy ( lies ).

Ok so they'll always be someone complaining, but let's not worry about those people. I think I'm aboug to play some Super Mario All Stars 25th anniversary to celebrate another 2D mario on the horizon!!

Game On!

  1. Me personally, while I quite like the idea of the next New Super Mario Bros game taking inspiration from Virtual Boy Wario Land (they should make a Mario All Stars like collection of that series too one day, the games were great, and could have been even better if things like the graphics were fixed up and standardised), I think personally they should try just skipping the 'New' bit and just make a classic style Super Mario Bros game, complete with the name 'Super Mario Bros 6' or someting.

But more interesting, the next game should just actually expand the Mario series universe and give us something new. Not sure what, but a sort of 'non Bowser involving' game like Super Mario Bros 2 with a different country, a different villain for once and some more interesting locales than just another carbon copy of the Super Mario Bros 3 ones.

Really though, not all mainstream Mario games need to involve Bowser and even Peach in some way, and I think it'd be nice to see one in the style of the Super Mario Land games with a few classic enemies returning but a generally new bad guy behind the events of the story. Someone like Wario or Tatanga which could then maybe get their own minor reappearances and/or series. Maybe a few interesting new power ups and such as well.

    But that's just my thoughts.

  2. That's kind of where I'm at right now. Mario needs something different, but it's hard to say exactly what that different thing was. Watching the Super Mario Land Virtual Console demo kind of makes me want to see something that might return to or expand on a possibly upgraded Sarasaland with a revenge seeking Tatanga in tow. I always thought he was a badass villain since he did have a transforming spaceship and all.

  3. Mario games have always had great music. Who hasn't found themselves whistling or humming one of the iconic Mario tunes? This game has some really cool new music, as well as some remixes/revamps of classic Mario music. When I found myself in the first of the Koopa Kid castles and I heard the original music from Super Mario Bros 3(??), I was ecstatic.
