In the great Other M debate everyone is very quick to throw out the Metroid manga in defense of Samus' newfound characterization, but I offer a different alternative; The Nintendo Comics System, which was featured back in the 90s by Valiant Comics. The series featured stories about Mario, Link and even had a Captain N: The Game Master mini series (I will be posting more on this in the future). This version featured a more first-party centric cast than the cartoon, replacing Megaman and Simon Belmont with the amazonian intergalactic bounty hunter, herself.
Granted, she like most of the characters are strictly used in a metaversal fashion, and tended to be used here in the place of Simon in the sometimes awkward love triangle between Princess Lana, and Captain N, but the writers still manage to get the fact that she was a galaxy trotting space warrior and not some whiny little girl with daddy issues! In fact her stoic personality and strong resolve resulted in her and Princess Lana getting into the mother of all cat fights when it's assumed that Samus may have been responsible for the disappearance of the King of Videoland.
I'm not saying that this is the definitive version of the character, but this version tends to fall more in line with the 'Baddest bitch in the galaxy' persona moreso that what's been presented in Other M, and by an American comic company... I'm noticing a trend here.
